Day 173 (Empty Nestering Again) - Little Bear Popcorn

One of my favorite children's stories is the one by Frank Asch called "Popcorn".  I think it was a favorite of my kids too.  It's a story of a little bear who decides to host a Halloween Party while his parents are away at their own Halloween Party.  He invites lots of friends and asks each one of them to bring a favorite treat to share.  Well, they all bring popcorn.  So when it is time for treats, little bear pulls out his mom's huge kettle, puts it on the stove, pours oil in the kettle and pours in ALL the popcorn.  That kettle was pretty full of popcorn because it pops and pops and pops and fills up the entire house!  Poor little bear and all his friends have to eat and eat and eat until all the popcorn is gone and the house is back to normal or else little bear will be in terrible trouble!  Needless to say, little bear is totally sick and never wants to see another piece of popcorn again...he goes to bed with a nice, too full, belly of popcorn.  When little bear's parents arrive home, they find their home all in order.  Like a parent, they are very proud of their son who was so good while they were gone.  They wake him up because they have brought home for him his favorite treat!  Yup, you guessed it...popcorn!

Aw, I totally love that story...probably because I love popcorn!  I loved to read the story to my kids and then we would go make popcorn!  But what made it extra special is we would make it the way little bear did in the story...the old-fashioned way with a frying pan, oil, and popcorn.  For some reason, popcorn made that way just tastes better!!  Whenever we go camping, we love to pull out the frying pan and oil and make "Little Bear Popcorn" too, and all the kids know exactly what we mean.

Tonight, Scott made "Little Bear Popcorn".  He heard on his "healthy talk radio station" that if you pop the popcorn in coconut oil that it is actually good for you!!  Woohoo!!  Healthy Little Bear popcorn!!  It was tasty!  We ate our popcorn while reading our scriptures together!  Mmm...feeding the body AND the spirit!  It doesn't get much better than that!!
